Busy week, still so much work to be done :s .. we got two new briefs to work on this week. First is to design branding for the FD pop music courses recording company and we are also working on a anti-fur competition brief with the photography students. Has been great experience working with someone different course and I'm excited to see how our idea turns out once we get everything sorted for the shot.
Dave MacDonald From infinite design talk - www.infinitedesign.com
I thought his this talk was one of the best we have had from someone from industry. Dave was very passionate about his work and design in general. The talk was all about finding your first job and his design career since leaving Newcastle College in 1996. He started working in London at a couple of leading agencies but although the work was great, working on designs for top brands etc he hated London so left to come back to Newcastle. I think I would feel the same... I have only visited London once but I know that I would never like to live there.
After he came back he found it very hard to find a job in Newcastle, even though he had been working for top agencies. He found a job working on music covers after 12 months out of work but left the same morning. He knew straight away that it wasn’t the right job for him, this sounded a bit strange after you have been out of work for so long. Although I think it was brave of him to walk out and understand he wanted to be somewhere he would be much happier working.
He then worked at infinite for 9 years he got the job as one of the designers there left for London. He showed some of the work he has done over his career. His work was great and like how he had a story about each that we could learn from. I liked that he talked about some of the bad experiences but how he has learned so much from the bad experiences that he changed the way he worked for the better.
He pointed out the importance of networking and working with other designers to keep work varied and interesting. It also helps to have people you know that can help out on certain design jobs you may have or even introduce you to new clients etc.
Also how keeping up with your own personal work can help show your personality through your portfolio and may land you a new job. Keep up with trends and new stills.
I found the last part of the presentation very reassuring as it helped feel more relaxed thinking about doing interviews. It sounds so simple but you just need to be yourself and not try to act any differently then you normally would. They are just like you, you both have an interest in the same subject so don’t feel nervous talking to them.
He did talk about how some people have stolen his and other peoples design work and presented them as their own. I found this very shocking but glad to know that these types of people get caught eventually. I don’t see the point if you can’t do the same type of work if you get the job then you will eventually be found out.
Thought it was good how he broke down into sections what kind of person he looks for when interviewing designers. Some very simple points but has helped me to understand more about how the employer is thinking while at the interview. How important it is to be confident about your work, be receptive of any negative feedback, always be positive and show you are a great person to work with. I think this talk has definitely made me feel more confident and prepared for interviews.
